Pashmina is the rarest, finest grade of cashmere — the soft undercoat of the Changthangi goat, native to the Ladakh Himalayas at over 4,000 meters, where winters fall to −40°C. That cold is what makes the fiber this fine. A single goat yields only enough for a fraction of one shawl each year, hand-combed once during the spring molt, then hand-spun and hand-woven by artisans in Kashmir — nothing synthetic, nothing mass-made.
DESCRIPTION
Hand-woven from genuine pashmina cashmere sourced from the high-altitude Kashmir Valley, India, this shawl is produced by artisans practicing a generations-old weaving tradition that cannot be replicated by machine. Pashmina cashmere is among the finest natural fibers in the world, combed from the underbelly of Changthangi goats at elevations above 14,000 feet, yielding a fiber of exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio and a micron count fine enough to pass through a finger ring. The close plain weave produces a surface with a naturally soft hand and a quiet, understated sheen that deepens with wear and age. Hand-knotted fringe finishes the two short width edges of the shawl; the two long edges are clean, unfringed selvedge — precise and deliberate in their plainness. It may be worn looped as a neck wrap, draped fully across the shoulders as a shawl, or gathered as a full-body wrap against cold. The color is a solid, rich navy blue.
